Welcome to dermatopedia!

Dermatology is a rapidly expanding field that is impossible to follow for a human being. It is estimated that there are over a hundred journals devoted to skin diseases. Textbooks and dictionaries tend to age rapidly. There are several influential dermatology schools in the world and the current trend to present everything in Eglish leads to further confusion. For example, in the German school of dermatology - the cradle of the modern science of skin diseases - "Ekzem" (eczema) means "chronic dermatitis", whereas "Dermatitis" means acute phase of skin inflammation. On the other side of Atlantic, the North American school of dermatology understands "eczema" as acute, and "dermatitis" as chronic form of dermatitis. Some careless translations from national languages to English and then further to another national language also adds to the confusion. This situation is challenging to experts, let alone novices to the specialty. Nevertheless, one cannot leave everything to artificial intelligence. Hence this humble attempt at creating a platform intended to be a grid for dermatology definitions and concepts relevant in dermatology presented as short encyclopedic entries, supplemented with in-depth, evidence-based comments supported by relevant literature. A second, perhaps even more important goal was to create a platform for communication and exchange of ideas between all those interested.

Inevitably, the founder and editor-in-chief is left to his own resources to feed the content to the journal until other authors hopefully take notice and are convinced to publish. Especially when no global publishing company is involved in this independent, citizen project. It's no surprise, then, that almost all the articles in inaugural issues are written by the editor-in-chief. However, I firmly believe that this will be a temporary situation. I look forward to collaborating with the thriving community of dermatologists, venereologists, allergists, pediatricians, and all researchers and scientists interested in concise definitions in dermatology.

Our journal is wide open to all authors interested in submitting:

  • Short monographs or concise reviews of dermatology terms.
  • Comprehensive definitions of medical terms related to dermatology.
  • Reviews or original proposals for systematics and dermatology nomenclature.
  • Concise reviews of mechanisms of skin diseases and disturbances.

We are looking forward to accepting your valuable contributions in our journal!

Professor dr hab. med. Radoslaw Spiewak, dermatologist, venereologist and allergist
